Congratulations to the Arlington Free Clinic, Bradley Free Clinic, Charlottesville Free Clinic, Chesapeake Care Free Clinic, CrossOver Healthcare Ministry, Lloyd F. Moss Free Clinic, GoochlandCares, Park Place Dental Clinic, and Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic who recently received funding from Delta Dental of Virginia.

When Connie Moslow first moved to Powhatan (some 40 years ago), she began volunteering and noticed a lack of affordable medical care. It was after she discovered that Powhatan residents were visiting Richmond's free clinic in search of care that she decided to create one for her community. “I waited around thinking someone else would start one, and no one did. So, I thought, ‘Well, let's go do it.' It's been a great thing for the county, it's been a great thing for me, it's been a good thing for our patients, it's been a good thing for our staff.”

From a humble beginning with the Bon Secours Care-A-Van to moving into its own building, Connie Moslow has been the steady hand guiding the Free Clinic of Powhatan. In her tenure the clinic has expanded its services numerous times, beginning with only basic services in a donated space to becoming a full-service clinic with primary medical, pharmaceutical, dental, mental health, and women's heath services all in one place following a move into newly renovated facility in March of 2021. “Now we have all the room we need and were able to expand our hours and increase our patients served,” Connie said about the new clinic space.

For the first time in its history, the Free Clinic of Powhatan will have new leadership. After 15 years, Connie is stepping down as executive director, a voluntary role in which she took no salary. In her place will step Elizabeth Ream. Her combination of non-profit management and clinical experience gives Elizabeth a unique set of skills to oversee the growth and development of the free clinic. “I am excited to join such a dedicated group of people who are so committed to helping our community. Connie has laid a strong foundation for our growth and development. I am looking forward to continuing her mission.”

Free and charitable clinics depend on their amazing volunteers! Below is just one example of the critical role volunteers play, shared by a staff member of the Arlington Free Clinic on Patricia Ardila, a volunteer interpreter:

"Patricia's dedication to our patients knows no bounds. She volunteers weekly for both medical and behavioral health appointments and is always willing to jump in when we need help. She travels abroad to Colombia a couple of times a year and still finds time to interpret when she is there. She also translates medical forms for us when we need the assistance. Patricia comes to the clinic with an open heart and mind. Many patients have had Patricia as their interpreter multiple times, which helps increase their comfort level in a clinic setting."

Along with CrossOver Healthcare Ministry, Health Brigade and Loudoun Free Clinic, the VAFCC is proud to be a participant in the Roadmap to Health Equity, a first of its kind national partnership working toward delivering data-driven, equitable care in free and charitable clinics. Jointly led by Americares, Loyola University of Chicago and the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC), a national data repository was developed to capture quality measures and stratify them by demographics to identify and address inequity. By facilitating internal and external benchmarking, Roadmap supports clinics as they break down barriers to equitable care and shift internal systems and workflows to support the delivery of quality care. In this video, Karen Legato, the Executive Director of Health Brigade, describes what it means for free and charitable clinics to have this opportunity to be together as part of a learning collaborative. #FreeClinicsCare
